LESSONS at The GIG CENTER: about our school
Our fall 2021 semester has begun. We welcome all of our new and returning students, both in-person and via Zoom. If you're considering lessons, the info on this page and our registration page will provide details about our lesson program. Please contact us regarding specifics about scheduling, and we'll also be glad to answer any questions.
We welcome students of all levels (beginners to advanced), in all applicable styles (classical to jazz to rock & contemporary). Some minimum age requirements apply.
Our studios are equipped with all the necessary accessories, and we offer distance-learning as well. Students who come for in-person lessons bring their own instruments (except for piano & drum students); amplifiers are provided for electric bass & guitar.
Group/Band Performance Opportunities
Because we offer band performance programs in addition to private lessons, students are able to seamlessly integrate into a group setting to augment their private lessons if they so choose. The band programs are offered to our private students at a discounted rate.
We're looking forward to resuming our recitals in the spring of 2022.
Participation in recitals is encouraged, but not required. Recitals are for piano, voice, and brass students. (As of fall 2021, we do not have a woodwind or orchestral string instructor on our faculty.)
Details regarding summer lessons are made available the preceding spring.
(Very) Young Students
At the Gig Center, some minimum age requirements apply. If you're looking for music instruction for younger students, we confidently recommend Mary Ann Hall's Music for Children program.
With the September 2019 opening of the Gig Center's new location, we have re-dedicated ourselves to growing a program which has been built to the highest standards of musical education. The methods and philosophies that were developed and refined over decades of teaching at the Westport Music Center remain at the core of our approach to making lessons enjoyable and productive.
Chris Cass is an experienced guitar instructor who is also familiar with running a large private lesson program. Having worked at the Westport Music Center for 30 years, Chris brings a vast amount of knowledge to both his teaching and day to day management of our school.
Stephen Sasloe has been involved in music on a professional basis since the 1970's. Teacher, performer, composer and arranger, Steve is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, (and SAG) whose credits include movies, television, concerts, recordings and off-Broadway music direction. Steve received an Emmy award for his televised music direction of The News in Revue, and is currently the keyboardist and Musical Director for Jose Feliciano's touring band. Steve is committed to providing students with quality instruction and an exciting musical experience.
Andrew ("Drew") Willmott has been among our area's most highly regarded piano and brass instructors for over 20 years. A few highlights of his lengthy resume include performances all over the world with Czech trumpet star Lazco Diertche, and with the Glen Miller Orchestra. In addition to the Gig Center, Drew is on the faculty at Greens Farms Academy, and the New England Music Camp. Not just a uniquely gifted teacher, Drew is also qualified and experienced in instrument repair and maintenance.
